Event Schedule for 2024
All times below are presented in your local time zone.
OC // Opening Ceremonies
Join our hosts as we open our 6th Annual Khitomer Conference!
Presented By: Khitomer Hosts
1A // Space Politics, and How They Shape Our Worlds
Relationships between empires can greatly affect our writing, especially when it comes to world building. But what kind of relationships can empires have? And how can we use them to our advantage?
Presented By: Alex M (Pegasus Fleet)
1B // Antagonists: The ones we love, the ones we hate, and the ones we love to hate
What makes a good bad guy, and how can you put that to best use?
Presented By: Terrie (Theta Fleet)
2A // Starfleet Corps of Engineers & You
We're going to be talking about all things ships: bringing new designs to your world, making designs that fit your world, and challenges we face with ships.
Presented By: CipherHornet (Pegasus Fleet)
2B // Hybrids and How to Write Them
Everyone seems to love hybrid characters, but hybrid characters done poorly can be far-fetched and overpowered. Join us as we discuss some do’s and don’ts to help you create better, more believable hybrid characters.
Presented By: StarGirl Cass
3A // How to make an interesting character without Mary Sue
Have you ever had a Mary Sue come onto your ship and wreck havoc? Have you ever thought about making a new character, but didn’t want to fall into that trope?
Presented By: NC (Obsidian Fleet)
3B // Reliably Surprising and Surprisingly Reliable
Why Consistency and the Unexpected Are Your Greatest GM Tools And How to Balance Them
Presented By: Wes (Star Army)
4A // Live Sim Demo
Open to all. Return to the days of AIM and participate in a one-off episode of live Trek simming.
Presented By: Jillbn (Obsidian Fleet)
4B // Space Map Making
There is no denying it: maps are cool. For a sim, they can be very useful. They might provide context clues to players. Two systems near each other will have a different relationship than two that are far apart. A system alone deep in unexplored space will have a different history than one along the Cardassian border. And what about one caught between the two empires you’ve invented for your game? A star map can help visualize all these things, and as I said, they’re just cool. In this panel, Taral will show you one way to make a space map for your sim using the free software GIMP.
Presented By: Taral (Pegasus Fleet)
5B // Using Departments and Locations Other Than the Bridge
How many times is medical and engineering and science forgotten during a sim because the action is all on the bridge. The senior officers can have an excuse to be on the bridge, but the rest are sitting twiddling their thumbs until there is something to do. So how do you feature departments that are forgotten because it's more fun to have space battles? Come and find out.
Presented By: Commodore Mardel Shayron-Connor (USF)
5A // AI – a Novel approach to Simming?
How does the advent of a new generation of AI affect how we approach simming? Join Obsidian Fleet’s Paul (definitely not a Bot) to discuss what difference AI can make to the way we play together.
Presented By: Paul (Obsidian Fleet)
6B // Trivia
It's trivia time! Join us for General Knowledge, Movies & TV, and good ol' fashioned Star Trek. Worried you can't keep up? Winners are determined by HIGHEST score, not who can type the fastest.
Presented By: Aio (Khitomer)
6A // Rule of Cool
Sometimes we seek out those intangibles that make characters, stories and other things cool. But how much is too much?
Presented By: CipherHornet (Pegasus Fleet)
7A // Creating Custom Races
It's not particularly easy to create a new race to use for a plot, much less one that may come up again as a recurring 'series.' It's even harder to make one up and get it approved in most Star Trek Roleplaying Organizations today because of rhetoric, or too many people being burned by a player abusing it, or perhaps, just not giving things a chance. There are a number of sure fire ways to get more than a glance and instant rejection. We'll talk about a few of those today.
Presented By: Angelus (Pegasus Fleet)
7B // Crossover Sims
Captain's log: We found a space anomaly that has created something of a problem for us, or rather it found us and we are meant to be here according the universe. Now we have to figure out who we can trust and how we can get back home. Diary Entry: I was out hunting, as usual and ran across a small group of people that looked like a boy band or rejects from a sleepover and they asked for help. How is a vampire hunt supposed to help people from space? Does this sound like a fun crossover? Come and find out how to make it happen.
Presented By: Commodore Mardel Shayron-Connor (USF)
8 // Awards, Future Plans, and Reflections
The Khitomer Hosts will be presenting the first-ever Khitomer Peace Awards, along with sharing future plans and reflections for the Khitomer Conference.
Presented By: Khitomer Hosts
